New Jatropha curcas variety 
with larger seeds

In the town of Sambava, in the north of Madagascar, a variety of a Jatropha curcas species was photographed (by R. K. Henning), which has extremely larger leaves and also larger fruits and seeds. (Click on the pictures to see them enlarged!)

the left leaf and the left fruit and the 2 left seeds are from the ordinary J. curcas, the right ones are from the sambava variety

The objective of this “Journal section” in the Jatropha website is to give the visitors of this website and people working in the Jatropha field the opportunity to publish the results of their work and to present them to a large interested public.

The discussion about this articles can be done in the Jatropha Discussion Forum.

To publish an article, please send your paper by e-mail to Mr. Reinhard Henning. If it is accepted, it will be published in the Journal section, together with the e-mail address of the author. Articles can be written either in English (preferred), in French or in Spanish. It is recommended to add an English summary, if it is in one of the other languages. Jatropha in Yunnan - China

In China, Jatropha is mainly distributed in the hot-dry valley areas in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan.

The Yunnan forestry authorities say that actually about 500 thousand mu (33 thousand ha) are covered with Jatropha forest. The province has projected to develop about 10 million mu (667 thousand ha) of Jatropha forests in the next few years.

Madarail, a private enterprise which runs the railway system of Madagaskar, is planning to run the train from Antananarivo to Toamasina (Tana - Côte est, TCE) with Jatropha oil. Each year about 100 ha of Jatropha plantation shall be created. See the photo of a similar train at right.

Feasibiliy study in the SAVA region in the noth east of Madagascar (vanilla region) finished. The aim of the study was to look into economic feasibility of the production of Jatropha oil as substitute for diesel fuel. Results will soon be available.
